  4.     Do some airlines have too large a share of business at certain
  5. airports? The Justice Department showed its concern about that
  6. possibility last week, when it opposed Eastern Air Lines' proposed
  7. $75 million sale of eight gates at the Philadelphia airport to
  8. USAir. Reason: USAir would control 23 of the airport's 49 gates.
  9. Consumer activists contend that such dominance gives a carrier an
  10. unfair ability to boost fares.

  12.     In a new study, the General Accounting Office reported last
  13. week that at airports with one or two dominant carriers, fares per
  14. passenger-mile were 27% higher than at other airports. Airline
  15. spokesmen disputed the conclusion. The Air Transport Association,
  16. an industry group, released a study showing that fares were only
  17. 3.8% higher at hub airports. Congressional subcommittees are
  18. studying both reports.
